Two fathers raising young daughters in Bernal Heights found themselves thinking hard about how to square the idea of nature--abundant, life giving, crawling charismatic animals--with the reality of the world their children would grow up in--where nature is often dangerous or annoying, and where those charismatic animals are inexorably diminishing. These parallel trains of thought led to two books, both published this year.
Jon Mooallem (the Ellsworth Mooallems) wrote Wild Ones
, in which he compares the ecosystem of happy whales on onesies, with the grimly real ecosystem where species are disappearing.
Nathanael Johnson (of between Emmy's and Ichi) wrote All Natural,
in which he fact-checks his all-natural family belief that what's natural is healthy.
Come join them for a conversation about animals, health, and embracing nature pragmatically.
