Minutes of the regular meeting of Thursday, October 19, 2006.

(As approved November 16, 2006)

The San Francisco Public Library Commission held a regular meeting on Thursday, October 19, 2006 in the Koret Auditorium, Main Library.

 

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Coulter at 4:23 pm.

 

Commissioners present: Bautista, Chin, Coulter and Gomez. Commissioner Higueras was excused.  A quorum was present. 

 

AGENDA ITEM #1: PUBLIC COMMENT

An anonymous member of the public commented that today’s agenda was not delivered to his home by mail, the agenda was not posted on the Library’s website 72 hours in advance and recalled a memo from Mayor Feinstein that asked  members of Boards and Commissions to refrain from eating when attending those meetings.

 

Commissioner Kane arrived at 4:28 pm.

 

Demece Garepis, Bernal Heights resident, urged continuing with Bernal Branch renovations as designed and expressed appreciation to Commissioners for listening to the diverse opinions related to the Bernal Heights City College preschool Program.

 

Peter Warfield expressed disappointment that the passing of Marjorie Stern was not noted on today’s agenda and questioned how reliable the Library’s statements are regarding purchasing of out of print materials.

 

Denise Shucks related two incidents that involved SFPL security officers in the Main Library.

 

AGENDA ITEM #2: APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Approval of minutes of September 21, 2006 continued to a future meeting.

AGENDA ITEM #3: BOND PROGRAM MANAGER’S REPORT

 

Marilyn Thompson, Bond Program Manager, updated the Commission on Budget, Schedule, Active Projects, Construction and Community Outreach (copies attached.)

 

Ms. Thompson presented an overview of some active projects presenting slides that detailed some of the many improvements incorporated into the renovation projects.  She also highlighted a variety of upcoming community outreach activities.

 

In a special report, Ms Thompson and Brain Bannon responded to the March 16, 2006 peer review of Bernal Heights Branch (copy of responses attached.)

 

Public Comment on AGENDA ITEM #3: Bond Program Manager’s Report

 

An anonymous member of the pubic commented on the number of branches that will be closed through 2009 and offered some thoughts regarding issues including the mural at Bernal Branch.

 

Sue Cauthen asked if the BLIP report could be mailed before the meeting, asked how much the proposed Portola Branch is over budget, and asked for reports in a timely fashion.

 

Peter Warfield asked for book counts, seating counts, and table space before and after Bernal Branch renovation.  

 

AGENDA ITEM #4: ADJOURNMENT

MOTION: By Commissioner Bautista, 2nd Commissioner Chin to adjourn the regular October 19, 2006 Public Library Commission meeting.

 

Public Comment on AGENDA ITEM #4: ADJOURNMENT

Peter Warfield asked once again for the various book, seating and table counts for Bernal Branch.

 

ACTION: AYE 5-0 (Bautista, Chin, Coulter, Gomez and Kane)

 

The meeting was adjourned at 5:35 pm.
