In Paths Untrodden

Walt Whitman’s Calamus Poems and The Radical Faeries.
Event detail

2010 was the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Walt Whitman’s homo-affectional poem cluster “Calamus” This exhibition will articulate the place and importance in LGBT culture of “Calamus” and draw a connection between the poems and the creation of the modern LGBT community with an emphasis on the Radical Fairie Movement.

By the use of text, photos, antiquarian books and newspapers the exhibit will tease out Whitman’s vision of the “love of comrades” and the social and political role he saw it playing in that larger project, the creation of “America”.
