Books and Illustration by Belle Yang
Event detail

Belle Yang has spent two decades seeking justice, through her writing and illustration, for a people who have been devastated by World War II and under Communism.  Her main focus, the House of Yang in Manchuria, represents the larger social landscape of turmoil, war and hunger.  Yang’s adult nonfiction memoirs and her latest work, a graphic memoir Forget Sorrow: An Ancestral Tale, is her attempt to give voice to the men and women who disappeared in the chaos without a murmur.  Her children’s book are set in Asia and America are largely autobiographical, especially the story of Hannah Is My Name, based on her first years in San Francisco.  The exhibition features 45 paintings, six books and three illustrations in addition to a PBS video documentary, “My Name is Belle”.
