San Francisco Public Library invites kids of all ages to enjoy a literary phenomenon sweeping the country. Join us for a festival of short films produced by children in celebration of the Newbery Award!
The 90-Second Newbery is a video contest in which filmmakers of any age (but mostly kids and teens) make movies that tell the entire story of a Newberry Medal or Honor book into 90 seconds or less using mostly kid and teen actors. Ever since 1922, the Newbery Medal has been recognized as the most prestigious award in children’s literature. But it turns out that any book, no matter how worthy and somber, becomes pleasingly ludicrous when compressed into 90 seconds.
What’s your favorite Newbery Award winner? This year, many readers loved The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Maybe you liked that obscure 1922 Honor book The Old Tobacco Shop: A True Account of What Befell a Little Boy in Search of Adventure by William Bowen?
The 90-Second Newbery has something for everyone, and the short films are made by and starring kids from all over the world who tried to capture what makes their favorite book special.
James Kennedy, author of the young adult novel The Order of Odd-Fish founded the festival to encourage reading and creativity. James curates each year’s selections and uses professional film editing techniques to make them even better. Join him for a program of fun and surprises—you might even meet a few favorite local authors.
The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival is free and open to the public. To learn more or make your own film for next year, go to: www.90secondnewbery.com.
