In honor of Black History Month and the beginning of Hollywood's Award season, Potrero Branch will be showing award-winning movies about  African Americans. 
This week:

THE DEFIANT ONES starring Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis. Convicts Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier escape from a chain gang. Curtis' character, John "Joker" Jackson, hates blacks, while Poitier's character, Noah Cullen, hates whites. However, the men are manacled together, forced to rely on each other to survive. The movie won 2 Oscars, and was nominated for 7 more, including Best Picture of 1959; it won the Golden Globe for Best Pitcure, and was nominated for 5 other Globes.
