Cover of bookDelight Rice, a hearing daughter of deaf parents and the subject of the book The Life Story of Mother Delight Rice and her Children by Ronald Hirano, was a pioneering teacher of deaf-blind pupils at the Wisconsin and Ohio schools for the deaf in the early 1900s.

In 1907, the U.S. government sent her to establish a deaf education system in the Philippines.  Unable to find any deaf children in Manila and surrounding provinces, she and American constabularies searched the interior mountains, populated by wild, hostile headhunting tribes, for deaf children.

Author Ron Hirano, a deaf Nisei, was "adopted" by Delight Rice when his family was interned in relocation camps during World War II.
