The Little Maga/Zine Collection documents the alternative press of the San Francisco Bay Area. The core collection was formed and opened to the public in 1967 with forty little magazines. The collection has grown to represent almost every literary and cultural movement from the 1940s to the present, and includes political little mags and self-published zines. Those publications outside the Bay Area, but associated with San Francisco - through content, contributors, editors - are also collected. Currently the collection holds over 4,100 items.
The Little Maga/Zine Collection is located in the Book Arts & Special Collections Center, on the sixth floor of the Main Library, Civic Center. This non-circulating collection is available to readers during the regular hours of the Center: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 10a.m. - 6p.m.; Friday: 12 noon - 6p.m.; Saturday: 10a.m. - 6p.m.; Sunday: 12 noon - 5p.m.
The San Francisco Public Library also subscribes to and has extensive holdings of periodicals (including little magazines and zines), which are available in the Magazines & Newspapers Center, fifth floor, Main Library. Many pre-1990 volumes must be paged from library storage; patrons may request these items 24 hours in advance. Contact the Magazines & Newspapers Center, at 415.557.4440, for more information. Certain subject specific periodicals may be found in the San Francisco History Center and Book Arts & Special Collections.
Periodicals in the Main Library collections are primarily reference only. Please use the Library's online catalog for complete periodical holdings.
The Little Maga/Zine Collection continues to grow, mainly through donations.
