Since the late 1960s the Art, Music and Recreation Center has created and maintained files on the visual and performing arts, sports, and recreation. The files are local in focus and encompass all the institutions and organizations related to these subjects.

We have built these files by clipping the daily and Sunday editions of the San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle. Other publications clipped for the file include the Bay Guardian, S.F. Arts Monthly, Nob Hill Gazette, SF Weekly and the Independent, and several neighborhood newsletters. In addition to newspaper clippings, these files contain catalogues, programs, schedules and brochures. The geographical scope of the files for many years had included the entire San Francisco Bay Area. As of January 2003 coverage has been limited to San Francisco events and subject matter. All files have been retained, but non-local files are now closed. As of 2011 the clipping files will no longer include the San Francisco Chronicle.

Acceptable ID will be held while the files are in use. The contents may be photocopied under the supervision of Art, Music and Recreation reference desk staff. We cannot read, mail, scan, fax or photocopy any file items.
