This collection consists of scrapbooks the San Francisco History Center has acquired over the years that are not part of larger archival collections. The volumes document the lives of individuals, the activities of organizations, and the events of the day that the creators deemed worthy of remembering.
Scrapbooks are identified and arranged by an assigned number. Occasionally, a ‘scrapbook’ may consist of more than one volume, but all parts are represented by the one number. Oversize volumes are identified. A subject guide follows. Subject access is also available through the San Francisco History Center’s Biography Index and Subject Index cards. For publication, citations for items should read:
[Title], Scrapbook Collection, San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library.
Photocopying of scrapbooks is prohibited, due to the fragile nature of the books, as well as to prevent fading resulting from light exposure. Photographic reproductions may be made through arrangements with the Photograph Collection staff. Some scrapbooks have been microfilmed, and photocopies can be printed from the microfilm.
This collection was inventoried and described with the assistance of Leah Loscutoff, San Francisco State University History Department intern, in Spring 2000.

- Notes
- James G. Fair was a Comstock millionaire and Californian senator. This scrapbook documents the court case centering on the disposition of Fair’s estate; the question of whether Mrs. Nettie Craven was his widow; and, whether she had a claim to two parcels of Fair’s estate. She was found to not be Fair’s widow, and his children received the inheritance. Later on, Fair’s son Charles died in an automobile crash, along with his wife, and a dispute arose over their estates.
