This footage includes 3 clips:
- Constructing the New Main Library
- A Rainy Day
- Steel Frame Going Up
The new Main Library construction process was documented with a time lapse video camera and VHS VCR from April 27, 1993 through May 1, 1996. The camera was mounted on the roof of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium through the cooperation of the Department of Public Works, the Civic Auditorium staff, Turner construction and the San Francisco Public Library. Although initially a black & white camera was used, the majority of the footage is color. A total of approximately 600 days (a few weekends, mostly Monday-Friday) was documented, usually at a capture rate of one frame every four seconds. There were a few gaps due to technical difficulties and theft.
