Multifunctional Printers, Copiers & Scanners

KonicaMinolta Multifunctional Devices (MFDs) @ the San Francisco Public Library

San Francisco Public Library has replaced public printers and Xerox copiers with multifunctional devices (MFDs)…one machine that photocopies, prints & scans. These all-in-one devices are energy efficient and meet the City & County of San Francisco’s mandate that all City departments decrease their environmental footprint.

The KonicaMinolta Bizhub C280 is installed in all Library locations and provides numerous options for photocopying, printing, scanning and – at two MFDs in the Main Library – faxing.

In addition to printing from Library computers (desktops and laptops), you can print from your own computer for pickup at any library location.

Copy Cards / Print Cards / Payment

  • Purchase a new copy-print card or use the card you already have.
  • Cash and credit card are accepted for purchase; MasterCard & VISA only.
  • Minimum purchase of $1 using a dollar bill or credit card.
  • Add any amount; a maximum of $21 can be on a card at any time.
  • Card vending machines accept bills in denominations of $1, $5, $10 and $20.
  • Card vending machines accept any credit card amount, e.g. $1.20; $3; 80¢.
  • Credit card fees are not charged.
  • No change is given; no refunds are given; no coins are accepted.

Faxing

  • Faxes can be sent from two Main Library MFDs (one on the 1st floor and one on the 3rd floor)
  • Outgoing faxes only; patrons cannot receive faxes at the Library
  • Costs are $2 for the first page and $1 for each subsequent page (domestic only)

Flash Drives

  • Documents saved as JPG, PDF, TIFF and XPS files can be printed at an MFD right from a flash drive (all other documents must be sent from a computer). (see Printing below)
  • Scan and save documents to your own flash drive.
  • Bring your own or purchase flash drives at the Readers Bookstore at the Main Library.
  • Your flash drive may need to be reformatted if the MFD isn’t recognizing it. If there are documents on the flash drive worth saving, park them temporarily elsewhere before formatting so they won’t be erased in the formatting process:
    1. Insert the flash drive.
    2. Click Start and then click My Computer.
    3. Select the flash drive by clicking on it once.
    4. Right-click and choose the Format option.
    5. Change the selection under File System to FAT32.
    6. Click the Start button to begin the formatting process.

Language Settings

  • Control panel can display in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
  • Display resets to English after each copy/print card is ejected.

Photocopying

  • Card readers attached to MFDs accept payment via copy-print cards only; no cash, coins or credit.
  • Black & white=10¢ per page; color=40¢ per page
  • Copying cost is based on the number of pages put through the MFD, not the quantity of paper used.
  • Copy onto letter-sized (8 ½” x 11”) or legal-sized (8 ½” X 14”) paper only.
  • Do not add your own paper to the paper trays.
  • Do not remove paper from the paper trays.
  • Printing is programmed to be 2-sided when a document is longer than two pages, per City requirement; select single-sided printing if desired.

Print Release Stations

  • Print jobs will remain in the queue for 24 hours before being automatically deleted.
  • At most branches and the Main Children’s Center, release your print job from the MFD control panel directly.
  • At Chinatown and Richmond branches, use a Print Release Station in the adult area next to the MFD to choose specific MFD for printing.
  • Print jobs from PCs on Main floors 3, 4, 5 will be sent to Print Release Stations in the Copy Rooms on corresponding floors to choose specific MFD for printing.
  • Print jobs from PCs on Main floor 1 will be sent to a Print Release station next to the MFDs near the Information Desk.
