WHY: A successful partnership among San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the San Francisco Department of Public Works has led to the opening of wonderful new civic resources for the Sunset neighborhood.
The new Ortega Branch library has nearly doubled in size to almost 9,000 square feet, with an expanded collection of materials and a community meeting room. The library will be a “green” building, designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification or greater from the U.S. Green Building Council. Highlights of the sustainable features include a partial living roof that reduces energy consumption and provides a natural habitat for wildlife.
The library building and park were designed by the Building Design & Construction Division of the San Francisco Department of Public Works.
