The Early Literacy Mobile is a library in a big truck, designed for children 0-5 and their caregivers. “Early literacy” is what a child knows about reading and writing before she learns to read. The Early Literacy Mobile holds thousands of books for children under 5 years that have been carefully selected to encourage and support early literacy development. Diggers & movers, dinosaurs, dragonflies, frogs, monsters, princesses, tricycles, flowers, hummingbirds, even a barrel of monkeys. Picture stories, non-fiction, fairy and folktales, board books, early readers, books in Spanish and Chinese, teacher and parent resources, music on CDs, educational DVDs, and so much more. Plenty of materials for older children, too!
The Early Literacy Mobile visits child care centers all over San Francisco. Children visit the mobile library choosing a book to enjoy in the classroom. The children's librarian assists children and teachers recommending materials that meet their needs. The librarian also presents Every Child Ready to Read storytimes that support early literacy development and model best practices for teachers and staff.
The Early Literacy Mobile visits playgrounds in San Francisco on Tuesday mornings with the Swing into Stories/Playground Visits in partnership with SF Recreation & Parks. You can find the Early Literacy Mobile at Golden Gate Park Koret Children’s Playground, Parque Niños Unidos, & Helen Wills Playground.
