Writings by Learners

March 1, 2000
by Alice Triplett

My name is Alice Viola Triplett and I am 29 years old. I came to Walden House on September 28, 1999, from County Jail. When I came to Walden House, I did not think I would make it, but I did. Walden House has worked out for me, and now I have a big family of Brothers and Sisters. I love them very much.
When I came to Walden House, I did not know how to read or write. I did not know how to talk to people without arguing with them. But now, thanks to a very special lady, Joan D., I have changed a lot. She showed me a good way to go about things, and now I get along with people much better.
There is someone else I would like to talk about. His name is Kyle T. and he was my case manager. Kyle is the best, and I can go to him when I can’t go to anyone else. I love Kyle; he is my mentor.
Now it is time to talk about my life. When I was 16 years old, I was in love with a man who was 46 years old. He was not a good man to me, and he beat me up all the time. I still loved him. I had a baby with him, a little girl. Her name is Amanuella Patterson. She got taken from me when she was 2 years old, and I have not seen her in 7 years. I have been on drugs for 13 years. This is why my baby got taken from me—because of my addiction. Now I am in Walden House and doing well. I have been clean for 8 months, and my life has changed!

Things I would like to do in the Year 2000
by M.

I would like to travel to different countries to see things that I did not see before. Two of the places I would like to go are Australia and New Zealand.  They sound like interesting places.  I would like to see how people live there. I would like to see the big cities and the countryside.  I would like to gather more experiences in my life.  Then I could write more stories about the different things that I saw....and, of course, have fun..
