2008 Writer to Writer Challenge

Writer to writer logo
Once again this year, the California State Library (along with the Bay Area Literacy Network) is sponsoring the Writer to Writer Challenge for adult learners in library-based literacy programs throughout California.

The Writer to Writer Challenge is simple; adult learners are asked to write a letter to the author of a book they have read, or listened to, which has really inspired them. Last Year, Project Read’s Lanette Scott was one of the statewide finalists, and in 2006, former adult learner Leona Whytus came in first place in her writing category.

The State Library has even provided a very helpful collection of writing exercises for tutor-learner teams to use in preparation for submitting a letter to the Writer to Writer Challenge. This packet of information includes examples of winning letters from previous years. These materials, along with the official Writer to Writer entry forms, are available in the Project Read office and on our website – www.projectreadsf.org. We will also be happy to mail packets of these materials to tutor-learner teams who cannot pick up a hard copy or access the electronic version of the forms.

Each learner submitting a letter to the Writer to Writer Challenge will receive a certificate of participation from the State Librarian. A panel of adult learners from throughout the state will choose the top three letter-writers in each category. These individuals will earn cash prizes and a trip to the Writer to Writer Awards Ceremony along with a family member and their tutor. The deadline for submitting your letters is July 31, 2008. Happy writing!
