On Thursday, June 28, Leon Veal and Randy Weaver were invited once again to make a presentation at the Stacey’s Bookstore lunch time speakers’ series. This was the third year in a row that our friends at Stacey’s have asked us to participate in this popular weekly event.

Randy spoke first about Project Read’s mission, the specific services provided, and the importance of recruiting new volunteer tutors. Then, Leon captivated the crowd by describing his own experiences and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of Project Read’s adult learners.

There was an excellent turn out which included many current volunteer tutors who work in the area and were happy to add their own thoughts about the rewards of working with their adult learners. We had two members of the Wednesday Night Readers book club in attendance and they described the unique experience of taking part in these monthly book discussions.

Stacey’s Bookstore has been a long-time supporter of Project Read. Besides inviting the staff to participate in these lunch time presentations, they have also provided annual discounts for Project Read volunteers, gift cards to honor our tutor contacts, and invaluable purchasing support through their corporate sales office. Stacey’s is an excellent example of how local businesses can provide much needed community support to help Project Read enhance and improve our services.

And then I thought about when I was working downtown in the Financial District I had made a quilt. I called it the Ghetto Quilt. The pieces came from the garbage cans of the garment factories. I didn’t finish the backing, but this has given me the inspiration to do the backing on my quilt.

I got pieces and made me a quilt. Here it is. And thank you Project Read for letting me show you my creation. Please go to the deYoung to see the Quilts of Gee’s Bend before December 31, 2006.
