Portola Branch Library History

Portola Branch Library was the 14th branch established in the San Francisco Public Library system. It opened in 1927 as a Deposit Station. Among the locations of the Branch were 2549, 2666, and 2434 San Bruno Avenue. From October 17, 1995 until February 21, 2009, the branch provided services at 2450 San Bruno Avenue, its final leased site.

The Portola Branch is now located in a newly constructed building at 380 Bacon Street (at Goettingen Street), thanks to the Branch Library Improvement Program. Portola is the second of four leased-facility branches to open in a new City-owned building. Constructed in 2007-2008, the 6,300 square foot building features a north-facing view garden, natural lighting from numerous skylights, and stunning glass-shutter public art work by Dana Zed at the building’s entrance. The building was designed by the architectural team of Stoner Meek/Noll & Tam.

Expanded collections, a program room, a larger children’s area, a separate teen area, and technological upgrades have been included to support the needs of the Portola neighborhood’s individuals, families, schools, and community groups.
