How do I request a photocopy of an article to be sent through ILL?Before asking for a photocopy of an article, please check the Library’s online catalog to see if the Library owns the periodical that published the article. If not, you may request a photocopy of the article to be sent through ILL by using the online ILL article request form. How long does it take for a photocopy of the article to come through ILL? The average delivery time is two to six weeks. It depends on how many libraries own the periodical and provide photocopy service, how close they are to the San Francisco Public Library, and how quickly a lender is able to process the request. How will I be notified that the article has arrived? The Library will send a form letter to your mailing address (or e-mail address, if it’s in the Library’s database) when the item has arrived. Please pick up your article when it arrives. How long will you hold the photocopy of the article for me?The photocopy will be held for one month after you’ve been notified. If you do not claim it within a month, the article will be removed and thrown away. Please be advised that if you paid for the photocopy but did not pick it up before this deadline, you will NOT be entitled to a refund. May I keep the photocopy?Yes. The photocopy is yours to keep and do with as you please, within the limits of the United States Copyright Code. Why do I have to pay for some photocopies? If a library charges us a fee for shipping out a photocopy of an article, we will pass that charge on to you. The ILL department will try to find an institution willing to process your request without a fee, but sometimes the publication is only available at a fee-based institution. You will always be contacted first for approval before we send your request out to the charging library. I asked for a photocopy but got a reel of microfilm instead. Why?There are several practical reasons why the lending library might send a reel of film instead of making photocopies. The primary reason may be because of multiple article requests that appear in the same issue or in several issues that are close to each other in date—in this instance, the lender may choose to send a reel of microfilm instead. If you have questions about why microfilm was sent in lieu of a photocopy, please contact the ILL office at (415) 557-4406 during open office hours. Can I ask for a photocopy of a book when none of the libraries are willing to loan the book to me? Are there any costs?Libraries cannot photocopy an entire monograph (book) because of copyright laws. However, some lenders may offer to photocopy a passage from a book that they are not willing to loan. If this is the case and the lender charges a photocopying fee, we will contact you first before proceeding. Please be advised that the amount of pages photocopied will be dictated by the United States Copyright Code, and you might not be able to receive the entire section of your request. I got an ILL cancellation notice from the Library. Why?There are several reasons why a photocopy request is cancelled. Among them are:
