San Francisco Public Library Obituary Request Policy
The San Francisco Public Library will process obituary lookups for:

California Residents

Three per month
Requests must be sent via U.S. Postal Service. Must include stamped self addressed envelope
Neither telephone requests nor e-mail requests accepted.
Include date of death.

Out of State Residents

One per month
Requests must be sent via U.S. Postal Service. Must include stamped self addressed envelope
Neither telephone nor e-mail requests accepted.
Include date of death.

Out of State Obituary Lookups
The California State Library in Sacramento will loan newspaper microfilm to another library in the United States, however they will not loan microfilm to individuals directly. To request microfilm, contact the interlibrary loan department of your local library.

The California State Library will not perform obituary searches, however they will send a list of private researchers who will perform on-demand searches for a fee.
