A panel exhibit on the “Ellis Island of the West,” where one million people immigrated from 80 countries between 1910 and 1940. Sponsored by the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation. On view May 1-July 22.
Carved in Silence: Film screening of the dramatic story of Angel Island, the “Ellis Island of the West.” After the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882), potential immigrants suffered detainment and vigorous interrogation for up to two years on this small island within sight of San Francisco. This documentary features scenes recreated in the actual barracks and interviews with former detainees. Film producer and director Felicia Lowe will give a short talk and answer question.
