Witching Strains: Art Hickman and Sweet Jazz in San Francisco

6/01/11 - 8/31/2011

Main Library

San Francisco History Center Exhibit Space - 6th Floor

100 Larkin St.

Bandleader Art Hickman is credited with introducing “sweet jazz” to the world.  This type of music made Paul Whiteman famous and evolved into the “big band” sound.  Our exhibition of sheet music, photographs and ephemera puts flesh on the man who absorbed jazz rhythms on the Barbary Coast, bringing them to the Hotel St. Francis and, later, to New York City.
