2/18/12 - 4/12/2012
African American Center Exhibit Space - 3rd Floor
100 Larkin St.
This exhibit pays tribute to the long list of African American athletes who paved the way for the black athletes, male and female, that now weekly take to playing fields all over America. Be it college, professional or a group of friends kicking around a ball on some neighborhood playground, these modern day gladiators owe a lot to their sports forerunners.
They Were First: African Americans in Sports pays homage to great leaders of the past such as Fritz Pollard, the first African American to helm a NFL (National Football League) team, Oliver Lewis, the first African American winner of the Kentucky Derby, Vonetta Flowers First African American to win a medal in any winter Olympics game and many others. In visuals and text, the story of African American sports unfolds.
