Feb. 17:

How Safe is Safe, and Who Decides?

Our society seems to be obsessed with “safety.” We demand that our food be “safe” to eat, our water “safe” to drink, and our air “safe” to breathe. That obsession with safety can lead to anxiety, which itself can adversely affect our health and safety. Yet very few people among the general public truly understand what safety is, how it is evaluated, and who decides what is safe. This talk attempts to provide such understanding by describing the science behind the issues of “safety” and its mathematical companion, “risk.”

Instructor: Barbara-Ann G. Lewis.
Ms. Lewis is Associate Professor Emeritus, Civil and Environmental Engineering, at Northwestern University and a former Environmental Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory.

When: Sun, 2/17/2013, 12:15 - 2:30 p.m.

Where:  Latino/Hispanic Community Meeting Room B, Main Library
100 Larkin St.
