GuyWriters will celebrate National Poetry Month with four local gay poets. Joshua Merchant, Baruch-Porras-Hernandez, Sam Sax, and James J.Siegel will read their work, along with work by the poets who inspired them. Each poet will talk about how they fell in love with their favorite poets and how their work has shaped their writing.
Joshua Merchant a poet and activist based in Oakland. He is the 2011 Youth Speaks San Francisco Grand Slam Champion, and represented the Bay Area in the 2011 Brave New Voices national youth poetry festival.Merhcant was the Berkeley Slam's youngest Individual World Poetry Slam. Recently, he made his first adult poetry slam team an represented Golden State Slam's first slam team in the 2012 National Poetry Slam.
Baruch-Porras Hernandez is is a poet and theater artist who performs in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout North America. He is the Co-Host/Co-Organizer for The San Francisco Queer Open Mic. His work appears on DanseMacabre Online Literary Managzine and on print with Aim for the Head an anthology of Zombie Poetry -Write Bloody Publishing and OneDedCow literary Magazine. He has work forthcoming in Divining Divas, anthology of poems by gay men and the women who inspire them-Lethe Press.
Sam Sax is a Bay Area based writer, educator, and performer. He was Oakland's first queer grand slam champion. Sam curates a bi-monthly reading series in San Francisco aimed at producing new poetry/poetics.He has toured internationally performing at universities, slams, basements, alleyways, and amphitheaters. His work can be found in Rattle, Muzzle Magazine, The Evergreen Review, and other journals.
James J. Siegel is the director of GuyWriters. He has coordinated numerous literary events in San Francisco over the past three years. His poetry has appeared in numerous journals including Assaracus, The Cortland Review, Borderlands: Texas Poetry Review, Blueline, The Fourth River, and Divining Divas: 100 Gay Men On Their Muses.
