Keeping Up With Global Warming:

The Problem That Won't Go Away

A Series of 3 Illustrated Talks on the Science of the Sun, Earth, and Its Atmosphere

August 25:  How Humans Interact with Earth's Atmosphere

The series of talks continues, building on the information provided in Talk 1 (on August 18).  The main topics will be descriptions of actual observations made by scientists on rising temperatures and on what is happening to the world's plants, animals, and human habitations as a result of the world getting hotter.

The science of the Earth's atmosphere will be described, including its composition, its role in transmission of the Sun's energy to the Earth's ecosystems, and how clouds and dust particles affect Earth's temperature.  Methods used to study Earth's climates in the past will also be described, including the use of tree rings, pollen grains, and ice cores in which the atmosphere from the distant past has been trapped.

No previous knowledge of math or science is needed to understand the illustrated presentation.

Please note: Attending all 3 talks will provide the best background to understand this environmental problem, as each talk builds on the information from the previous one.  However, attending any one or two of them will give you some understanding of this increasingly worrisome problem for all inhabitants of this beautiful planet.

Instructor: Barbara-Ann G. Lewis, PhD
Ms. Lewis is Associate Professor Emeritus, Environmental Engineering, at Northwestern University and a former Environmental Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory.
