Three Artists Witness the Occupy Movement

10/23/13 - 11/02/2013

Main Library

Library Café Exhibit Case - Lower Level

100 Larkin St.

Anthony Holdsworth has been occupying the streets of Oakland and San Francisco as an urban painter for forty years, so 'Occupy' immediately resonated with him.  He grabbed his easel and headed for the encampments. He was surprised and delighted to find two other talented artists, each half his age, Jessica Joy Jirsa and John Paul Marcelo, painting there. They joined forces. John Paul and Anthony traveled across the Bay to witness Occupy San Francisco. And the three of them set up on an overpass to record the occupation of the Port of Oakland.

Their combined viewpoints from inside the camps paint a more accurate picture of Occupy than the limited coverage offered by the press. They see the emergence of the Occupy Movement is a sign that the ‘street’ is re-entering the political dialogue. It is a good time to be out, on site channeling this populist energy.

These paintings represent a selection from their combined works. Their video, which can be found online at http://vimeo.com/53273646 , gives a fuller idea of the Series.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11 am to 1 pm in the Main Library's cafe level, meet John Paul Marcelo, Anthony Holdsworth, and Jessica Jirsa and learn more about their work. After the reception, stay for the related We Are All Poets program and hear teen poets read their work in collaboration with SF City officials. Information: 415-557-4554.
