Checklist of Type Specimens

The majority of items on this list are monographs, with a few of the more important single sheet items included. The list is arranged primarily by the name of the author or foundry or printing establishment which produced the specimen; in a few instances, the designer's name is used. However, the materials are shelved according to main entry. Therefore, we will need the author, title, date, and location symbol in order to retrieve items more quickly and efficiently.

In addition to the items listed below, we hold a large number of specimen sheets and booklets for individual faces and foundries. Please email if there's a certain face that interests you.

The specimens listed here are part of the Robert Grabhorn Collection on the History of Printing and the Development of the Book, a major collection of over 10,000 volumes focusing on traditional letterpress printing. We welcome gifts and donations which will supplement and enhance this collection and which meet our collecting guidelines. Anyone interested is invited to donate to the collection; please contact the Center at 415-557-4560.

The Grabhorn Collection is a non-circulating collection. Photocopies may be requested through the Library's Interlibrary Loan Service, or made directly in person at the Center. Requests for photocopies are subject to the rules of the Center.

This is a work-in-progress; new specimens are added and updates are made frequently.
