Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology is a device or a computer-based accommodation that provides equitable access to programs and print or online resources for persons with disabilities. Most of the Library's assistive technology is available for use at the Main Library.

Services Available

• Accessibility Toolkits (simple assistive devices for use inside the library)
• BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download)
• Book holders (also at Branch Libraries)
• Braille display and embosser (printer)
• Braille signs
• CCTVs (closed-circuit televisions)
• Computer workstations with screen magnification and voice output/screen readers + printers
• Descriptive videos for home or Library use
• Free mail service of special playback equipment, books and periodicals on tape and digital cartridge
• Large print newspapers (Magazines and Newspapers Center); large print books are available on the 1st Floor, Children’s Center (2nd Floor), Teen Center (3rd Floor) and branch libraries
• Magnifiers, hand-held
• NFB-NEWSLINE for local and national newspapers read over the telephone
• Personal computers with screen magnification and voice output/screen readers, scanners with OCR, and printers
• Reading machines that scan printed materials and read them aloud
• Talking calculators
• Talking dictionaries
• Talking elevators
• Talking library catalogs with voice output and screen magnification
• Talking sign receivers
