Cash or check is accepted for late fines at any of our 27 locations. You can now pay for your library fines and fees online with either your Visa or MasterCard at any computer with Internet access, including public computers at any of the San Francisco Public Library locations.
If you’d like to pay in person at the library, the Main Library is the only location that can accept credit cards at this time.
Fines are not assessed until you renew or return the overdue items.Fines do not have to be paid all at once. You may continue to check out items if your total fines are not more than $10.00 and you do not have any billed items.
When paying for a lost SFPL item, a $5.00 non-refundable processing fee will be added to the cost of the item, and the total amount must be paid in full. If you find the lost item within one year of paying for it and still have your receipt, SFPL will refund you the price of the item. Refunds can be obtained with receipt from any of our 27 locations.
If you have lost a Link+ or ILL item, please contact the ILL department at 415-557-4406 before paying.
When replacing a lost SFPL item, the $5.00 processing fee is waived. The replacement copy must be an exact match of the original (i.e., author, title, publisher, year of publication, ISBN #, hardback or paperback, etc.) and must be in new or like new condition. When searching for a replacement, please be wary of inexpensive copies; these items may have been previously owned by other library systems or may be unsuitable for circulation for other reasons. SFPL reserves the right to refuse any replacement copy. You may take a replacement copy to any SFPL branch or to the Main Library. If you replace an item and later find the original material, no refund will be offered. You do have the option of donating the found item to the library so it can be put back into circulation.
