The San Francisco Public Library bookmobiles serve more than 60,000 patrons each year through the Library on Wheels, a mobile library branch for seniors; the Children’s Bookmobile, which serves preschools, head start programs and child development centers with books in English, Spanish and Chinese; and the Branch Bookmobile, a fleet of three vehicles that serves neighborhoods whose branches are undergoing renovation as well as Treasure Island which does not have a branch library.
Sponsored by the American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS), and the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL), National Bookmobile Day celebrates the role of bookmobiles and direct delivery outreach services in fulfilling the mission of libraries. An integral and vital part of library service in the United States for more than 100 years, bookmobiles provide access to information and technology and supply resources for life-long learning to Americans of all walks of life, no matter where they are – rural areas, cities, or suburbs. National Bookmobile Day is celebrated as a part of National Library Week.
