The Hand Bookbinders of California celebrates its 38th Annual Members’ Exhibition at the San Francisco Public Library with an opening reception on Tuesday, June 8 at 6 p.m., in the Skylight Gallery, Sixth Floor, Main Library. The exhibition continues through August 15.
The show features the work of professional bookbinders, as well as amateurs and students of the art and craft of hand bookbinding. Examples range from gold-tooled leather bindings to avant-garde artists' books and innovative designs that range from the traditional to the very contemporary.
Special tours of the show will be given by members of the Hand Bookbinders of California on the following Thursday mornings at 11 a.m.: June 24, July 8 and 22, and August 12. The public is invited to meet in the Skylight Gallery on the Sixth Floor for a lively description of the binders' work.
The Hand Bookbinders of California was formed in the San Francisco Bay area in 1972 in order to create a forum for people in the book arts to exchange information and promote their interests.
Membership in the Hand Bookbinders of California is open to anyone, and includes binders from throughout the United States.
The Hand Bookbinders of California meets monthly from September to June. The group sponsors bookbinding workshops and classes, and publishes The Gold Leaf, a quarterly newsletter.
