As part of the bond measure overwhelmingly passed by the voters in November 2000, the San Francisco Public Library is renovating the Bernal Heights Branch Library. We plan to make it seismically safe, fully accessible, and technologically updated.
Renovation highlights include a new expanded children’s room on the lower level and a designated teen area on the main floor. The renovations will also include an elevator and accessible restrooms, making the branch fully accessible to all. There will be an increased book and materials collection, wireless access to the internet, improved lighting, heating and ventilation, access from the playground to the children’s area, new furniture, and a variety of seating choices. The building’s original architecture will be respected and many historic features restored. During the renovation, library services will be provided by holding programs at neighborhood schools and community centers and by bookmobile service. The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library are raising funds from private donations for new furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the branch library.
