West Portal reopened on February 10 2007 to become the second branch to be renovated through the Branch Library Improvement Program, the November 2000 ballot measure resoundingly passed by the voters of San Francisco. West Portal will receive improvements for seismic safety and become compliant with the latest ADA standards, while preserving and enhancing the historic character of the existing building. A small expansion at the rear of the building will provide an elevator with an entrance from Ulloa Street as well as new upstairs restrooms. Inside, the branch will get a whole new makeover including restored furniture and historic features such as lights, ceiling stencils and woodwork, new computers, a designated teen area, and better staff work areas.
