“Do you also ponder we are all surrounded by a blind world?”
From Poems on Other Difficulties,
Ranier Maria Rilke, 1926
My work in the past nine years has been informed by HIV and the subsequent death of my
partner of twenty-two years to AIDS. It incorporates formal artistic concerns and themes
including love, grief, loss and the passage of time. I utilize words and texts in my painting,
collages and “Transformed” book sculptures. Taking a vandalized book and transforming
it into a positive artistic statement has allowed me to further explore the possibilities of the
book as a visual art object. Also it is an act in which I have tried to bring order to chaos,
and maybe some understanding into the world.
