When I received the book in the mail, it had been slashed with a razor in a calculated
fashion, as if someone had methodically gone through the library and destroyed all of the
books having to do with homosexuality. I imagined what a laborious task it must have
been for someone to go through the Library and destroy any book having to do with being
gay, and it scared me to think that there are people out there who are so motivated to
harm. The fear raced through my head that the person who destroyed this book for its
views, might do the same to me if given the opportunity. In creating this piece from the
ruined book, I wanted to show a physical healing process as it would happen in a person
who had been attacked as this book was. I wanted to create a work that would make
people face the reality of the hatred that is perpetrated against the GLBT community that
is all too often overlooked. I wanted to illustrate that a hateful act of aggression takes a
short time to commit, but takes a lifetime to heal.
