This piece explores names, clouds, disappearing, surface, wax, blood, color,
transparency, weight(lessness), suspension, hanging and transformation. I was
thinking about connections between the weight of scholarly research versus the
names identifying people (the scholars). The violence done to this book in
part was an attempt to invalidate not only their scholarly work but also the
individuals themselves. The altered book becomes a hanging altar honoring the
people listed in this directory. I waxed and gessoed individual pages, then
sliced them down to strips with only names exposed. The strips of waxed paper
were sewn together with silk thread in rainbow colors and attached to the spine.
The "reverse" side of the hanging book reveals the process of transformation as
well as bits of original texts.
