The inspiration for this sculpture came while reading (what was left of) Is it a Choice? Love, forgiveness, acceptance, understanding… all of these are recurring themes in author Eric Marcus’ “common sensitive” approach to exploring and explaining homosexuality...and all are communicated in the simple gesture of an upturned palm. Papier mâché and collage allowed me to connect with the text in an intimate way, and the deliberately primitive texture contrasts with the focal point of the work. The question posed is directed not only toward the Hormel Center’s vandal, but to all who believe in censorship of the written word. The title of the piece is taken from the author’s dedication to a friend “...who was never afraid to ask.”
