The book Kairos by Zalmon O. Sherwood was the inspiration for creating this three dimensional art work. Sherwood’s determination to become an ordained Gay Episcopal priest, to be of service to young and old without any intention of personal gain; to serve openly, honestly and to confront the hypocrisy of church authorities, was truly remarkable. The meaning of the title, Kairos, is appropriate to the time we live in when things and events are brought to crisis. Kairos is a Greek term for a moment, a decisive moment, a time of grace and a challenge to decision and action. The original intention was to use every bit of the book, to the extent of making paper pulp to form the figures but the book paper was not proper for the process. So the figures were made with sculpy/fimo and the pages were used to make symbolic wings and used in the background. I asked my partner, Kevyn Lutton, to collaborate in the art project and together we made a fitting tribute to Zalmon O. Sherwood during our own kairos.
