I had decided before receiving the book that I would let whatever shape the book was in, dictate the direction that the art should go. The way in which the book had been vandalized made it look somewhat like a bird, so that became the theme. The bird is symbolic of regeneration, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes. It was important to create a bird/book that exemplified rebirth, hope, freedom, and soaring to greater heights. The blue branch represents the sky, giving peace and calmness, and a safe haven for the bird. It is also to remind us to keep elevated thoughts. The branch is grounded in a rock to give it a strong foundation on which to rest.
