The Best Medicine evolved out of consideration for both the nature of the exhibition, Reversing Vandalism, and the title of the vandalized book, AIDS & HIV in Perspective, a Guide to Understanding the Virus and its Consequences, by Barry D. Schoub. A vandal cut part of the book cover off and slashed its pages. This artwork addresses the issue of vandalism, expressed in the further destruction of the book by shredding the remaining contents. Enclosing the shreds in gel capsules, which could represent vitamins or medicine, creates an impossible paradox that could apply both to AIDS, which has no known cure, and to the book itself, which cannot be repaired. My artwork examines contemporary social issues through the transformation of ordinary objects. By re-inserting these changed objects back into the world, I am able to reach a wider audience.
