I am a fiber artist; I work with primarily cotton and silk fabric to produce art quilts. I am
also a reader and a writer. I have begun combining words and art quilts. I find the
vandalism at the Hormel Center appalling and wanted to participate in the exhibition. I
have turned to sewing—specifically machine stitching—as a healing activity for myself.
Hence, the origin of my piece Mending. I have turned to fabric that’s painted and printed
with typographical elements—to collage with words and illustrations from the book I was
given. The strong black and white graphics are from the book. Initially stumped by what
to do to convey a sense of healing, I naturally turned to a woven design—thinking of
woven paper and fabric as a “mended surface.” The top layer of organza collaged over the
fabric adds an additional layer of “mending,” as does the machine stitching. I chose
passages from the book which seemed to fit with my theme.
The fabric used is designed by Lonni Rossi, a fiber artist.
