This piece was inspired by the contents of the book itself. The collected essays were about
lesbian and gay relationships and their role in history. I found it especially ironic that the
introduction spoke to several historical incidents of this type of information being burned,
buried or otherwise kept hidden, juxtaposed with the very destruction of the work itself.
The very idea that if we lock up something unpleasant and throw away the key, we are
somehow protecting ourselves, but we are really just hiding in ignorance and fear.
Personally I hoped to show the link between knowledge and freedom. The irony of a
society that claims freedom is to be treasured and valued while at the same time burying
knowledge and denying personal freedoms. When we know and understand our own
history, only then shall we be truly free to shape a better future. A future where we can
respect each other’s uniqueness and individuality and have a harmony that is not just
mouthed platitudes.
