When I received this book it was in pieces and had slash marks deep into its pages. As a surface response, it brought to mind that the pages as well as the act of vandalism and homophobia in our society create wounds, both physical and psychological. As an artist who also does book restoration, I repaired the book in such a way as to accentuate the damage that had been done. The overt stitching is apparently physical, yet as each page was stitched, the process of altering the book became meditative and emphasized the deep psychological implications and social insecurities that are at the root of this silent and subversively violent act of vandalizing books.
