The circumstances that surround this exhibition surely indicate the power of images, ideas,
words and the freedoms to express them. I appreciate the power of images especially.
The immediacy a picture provides speaks instantly and often in a fashion so overwhelming
as to cause extreme physical and emotional reaction. Provided with images, artists are
faced with the raw materials of the language in which they most effectively operate. I
thankfully accepted a book titled Hidden from History: Reclaiming the Gay and Lesbian
Past with which to study and consider a treasure trove of powerful ideas and images. As I
leafed through its pages, I noticed the illustrations printed on either side of the page would
echo across the translucent substrate on which they were printed. The reverberations of
these quaint, antiquated pictures, their ghostly visitations to one another, inspired the
photographs I took. I did not feel the necessity to come to conclusions for what would
prompt such violent actions to be visited upon this book. But I could imagine the fear felt
by someone unprepared for unexpected and familiar apparitions.
