The fundamental ideas of iconography and eroticism, the sacred and the profane and their relationship both artistically and philosophically, has been a part of my artistic process for many years. How fortunate I felt when I received by mail the damaged book Sex and the Church. A random act, a Jungian synchronicity, or divine act. “Christ I don’t know”. Vandalism; an act of smoldering rage and hidden or suppressed hate for “the other”, I believe is the result of wrongly interpreted sacred texts and biased, self-serving religious doctrines. Especially relevant today due to the sexual misconduct within the church, my piece may represent a metaphor. One that symbolizes the un-controlled heat of passion; both for the physical act of love as represented in text and art and the fiery opposition to its display because of one’s religious beliefs.
