City of Eros, New York City Prostitution, and the Commercialization of Sex, from 1790-1920, is the book I received from the Library. I felt more sadness for the books than for the person who destroyed them, although I wondered what type of person would do this; my thoughts were “poor books.” Prostitution is often looked at in this manner; people want sex but not the person. I created this piece to express my thoughts and feelings about the vandalism that was done to this book and how prostitution is a form of vandalism against the people who become involved in it.

Doing research on prostitution led me to the Prostitution Research & Education Web site. After I read the Prostitution: Factsheet on Human Rights Violations by Melissa Farley PhD, the words had a profound effect on me, which caused my view and art to change. Abuse has a cause and effect on all living things, and if we allow abuse to remain in our lives, it can destroy us.
