Kids— and adults —can kick up their heels this month while participating in a new interactive dance exhibit at the Main Library. In collaboration with John Crawford, a media arts specialist from the University of California at Irvine, the San Francisco Ballet Center for Dance Education will present Dance and Information Technology (Dance-IT), an interactive digital media installation developed to engage young people who love to dance, and to inform the community about dance from around the world.

The installation incorporates several different dance styles, including ballet, West African, Tahitian, Kathak and Mexican Folkloric, among others. Participants will have an opportunity to choose a dance style they would like to learn, and then video record themselves performing the dance. Whether inspiring dancers enjoy hip-hop or traditional Japanese dance, the presentation encourages participants to watch, learn and seek inspiration from all types of dance.

Dance-IT will be on display April 4 – May 4 in the Main Library’s Fisher Children’s Center. The exhibition’s hours of operation are as follows:

In conjunction with Dance-IT, a special dance workshop program for families and children (ages 6–13) focused on world dance and culture will be held from 2–3 p.m. on April 26 in the Children’s Center. Space is limited. To register for the workshop, please call (415) 557-4554.
