California Preservation Foundation Award for
Noe Valley/Sally Brunn Branch Library
The historic renovation of the Noe Valley/Sally Brunn Branch Library was recognized with a Preservation Design Award from the California Preservation Foundation, a statewide nonprofit organization that promotes historic preservation. The highly competitive awards program honors exceptional historic preservation projects for excellence in design, construction, planning and technology.
The renovation was designed by Carey & Co. Architecture, which worked diligently to preserve and restore the historic features of the 1916 Carnegie landmark library. The branch at 451 Jersey St. re-opened to the public in March 2008.
“We are honored to be recognized with this prestigious award for the significant and thoughtful restoration that went into this branch library,” said City Librarian Luis Herrera. “Thanks to the work of all involved, we were able to preserve many of the unique historic features of the Noe Valley Branch Library, ensuring this facility remains a treasure to the neighborhood and the entire city.”
The renovation and preservation work at the branch included exterior masonry restoration and painting and the addition of an elevator at the rear of the building for improved accessibility. The refurbishment of the library’s main reading room included refinished original tables, historically compatible lighting fixtures, a new linoleum floor and era-appropriate window treatments.
Renovation of the 6,096-square-foot branch was funded by bonds approved through the Branch Library Improvement Program passed by voters in November 2000 with additional funding raised by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library for furniture, fixtures and equipment.
