Postcards From No Man's Land

by Aidan Chambers

Postcards From No Man's Land holds very complex characters and ideas. It chronicles two stories. One is set in the mid 1990's and the other is during World War II. The first story is set in the 1990's when seventeen year old Jacob Todd visits the Netherlands to meet Geertrui, a Dutch woman who took care of his grandfather when he was wounded.

The second story is set in Holland and is narrated by Geertrui. She talks about her relationship with Jacob's grandfather. The two stories inevitably connect but also contrast as the differences in each era show up in the story.

It takes time and patience to read and absorb this story. It has so many things to think about and it didn't bore me at all unlike the usual historical fiction. It has been one of the best books I've read this year. I would definetly recommend this book.
